The SMAC exists for the purpose of flavour discovery and palate development. Meetings are held once a month in Brisbane, Australia where members get together and drink delicious whisky without ever having to fork out too much. Basically we share the cost of the bottle(s) and then share our thoughts. Non-meeting tasting notes will be added too, so get in touch if you would like to contribute.

NEAT

Jasmin *

Finish: Caramel
Meagan *
Nose: Sweet, Pineapple, Golden
1st: Nutty
Finish: Salty, Smokey
Lucy
Nose: Meadow Flowers, Maple Syrup, Butter
Palate: Has more of a bite neat
Finish: Smokey, Chewy
Brad *
Nose: Sugar, Sweet, Pear, Golden Syrup
1st: Apple
2nd: Soapy
Finish: Smokey, Brine
Michael K *
Nose: Sweet and Rich from smelling from afar, like really Fermented Pineapple. The sweetness comes across as a Beet Sugar Syrup which changes to more Smokey and Woody aromas after a couple sips.
Palate: Warming, Smokey, Woody
Matthew *
Nose: Sweet, Fresh. First smell is very strong, but aromas soon become more noticeable.
Palate: Slightly Smokey, Syrup
Andrew*
Nose: Light Smoke, Coriander, Vanilla, Brine, Maple Syrup
Palate: Floral, Soapy, Pineapple Juice
Jono
Nose: Fresh, Light, Honey
1st: Nutty, Light
Finish: Smokey
Dan
Nose: Sweet, Soft, Syrupy
Palate: Floral
Finish: Woody
Gavin *
Nose: Pineapple, Honey, Vanilla, Maple
1st: Floral (Lavender)
Finish: Nutty (Maccadamia, Almond), Lightly Smokey
Tristan *
Nose: Green, Soft, Sweet, Vanilla, Maple Syrup, Nutty, slight Caramel when sniffed from the edge of the glass.
1st: Fresh and White
2nd: Salty, Brine, Seaweed
3rd: Smokey, Nutty with a taste of New Wood. A fairly long lingering taste of Tannins/Acid and Florals.
Overall: A very light scotch that has very different nose and taste. Quite smooth.

WITH A SPLASH OF WATER

Jasmin
Nose: Vanilla, Lemon
1st: Butter Cream
Finish: Fresh Peppermint
Meagan
Nose: Citrus, Vanilla
Finish: Smokey - Really Smokey!
Overall: Adding water made the finish too strong. The neat had more subtle tastes that were more enjoyable.
Lucy *
Nose: Vanilla
Palate: More Caramel flavour than Maple.
Overall: Adding water makes it start smoother and finish with a stronger burn.
Brad
Nose: Apple, Vanilla, Pear
1st: Fresh
2nd: Soapy, Nutty
3rd: Citrus, Brine
Overall: The water made the 1st palate smoother but enhanced the finish. Tastes were similar with differing intensities.
Michael K
Nose: Sweeter, Softer, Vanilla
Palate: Smooth start which intensifies to a Strong Smokiness
Overall: Flavour is too intense at finish with water, like an over aged Shiraz
Matthew
Nose: Smells more Delicate, Sweeter
Palate: Smooth initial taste that changes to a burning sensation. The burn increases by holding it in the mouth for longer. Smokey.
Andrew
Nose: Sweeter, more Oak and Malt focus
Palate: As nose. Longer finish than neat.
Overall: Pleasant but unremarkable.
Jono *
Nose: Vanilla, Sweet
Palate: Vanilla, Nutty, Honey. Goes from smooth to harsh.
Overall: I liked it with water because it really opened up the 1st palate.
Dan *
Nose: Less Woody, Sweeter, Softer
Palate: Softer start with Vanilla, finishing with more Bite
Gavin
Nose: Vanilla, Butter Sugar, Faint Tangerine
1st: Herbal (Oregano), Spices (can't pick)
Finish: Strongly Smokey, Maple Syrup
Tristan *
Nose: The Vanilla's really come out with the water, and it is much Sweeter, almost like Creamed Butter. More Floral notes with a hint of Orange.
1st: Still Fresh Whiteness
2nd: A peak in intensity, still with Brine and Seaweed, but also a hint of Fresh Parsley
3rd: Again it is still Smokey in the 3rd, but with more Peats and an undertone of Nuts. You are left with a refreshing lingering Citrus
Overall: Very similar taste to neat, just with differing intensities, and actually fairly dry.
