Oban is a west highland malt produced by one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. It was founded in 1794 before the town sprung up around it. Oban means 'the little bay of caves'.
Tastings from 08/05/12 - SMAC Session #1
NEAT
Tristan
Nose: Honey, Almond, Almond Liquor, Dates and Melon. Quite a mellow nose which is rather 'warming'
1st: Strong Acids and is quite Heavy and Smokey, but this opens out a fair bit with a bit of oxidation
2nd: Apricots and other Fruits start to replace the Acidity, however light Peats remain
3rd: Continuing Apricot is complimented by Dark Chocolate, and Date at the back of the cheeks
Overall: A sharp peak of Acid that drops into a lower gear quickly to slowly roll into a warming Christmas - winter which is quite comforting. I could easily see this scotch being perfect for sitting in front of a fire on a cool winters eve.

WITH A SPLASH OF WATER
Tristan
Nose: The water cuts a bit of Sweetness from the nose and gives it an almost Powdery characteristic. Also brings out some Maritime noses, including Oysters and a bit of Salt.
1st: Very Light, with the water cutting the Acid out of the first
2nd: Acids are moved to the second, but are no longer as intense. Also quite Salty with some Ashen flavours
3rd: Maritime flavours die away and instead becomes quite Nutty, with a hint of Oranges
Overall: Water cuts the Fruit out and brings out the Coastal nature of the distillery, however it is still quite a comforting scotch. I recommend drinking neat.
