The SMAC exists for the purpose of flavour discovery and palate development. Meetings are held once a month in Brisbane, Australia where members get together and drink delicious whisky without ever having to fork out too much. Basically we share the cost of the bottle(s) and then share our thoughts. Non-meeting tasting notes will be added too, so get in touch if you would like to contribute.

Mackinlay's "The Enduring Spirit"

Rare Old Highland Malt, A commemorative recreation of the whisky taken by Shackleton to the Antarctic in 1907. MacKinlay's Rare Old "The Enduring Spirit"

Tristan's Notes, Neat
Nose: Delicate but firm nose, consisting of rose and orange with a wooded undertone. There is also a touch of vanilla and caramel, which collaborates nicely.
First: Fairly light, with a pepper base, and just a tiny hint of peach.
Second: Mostly smoky, and peats, with nutmeg, orange, and cloves.
Third: The Smoke dies away, but leaves lingering peats and the hint of cloves, dwindling into a warm toffee.

With a drop of water:
Nose: Butter/oily, "green" which is mostly basil, and a hint of orange nicely complimented with just a very light cigar smoke.
First: watery
Second: very light, with hint of spices to a nice backbeat of oaky wood.
Third: maintains the lightness, and includes a bit of smoke that dies away to the taste of salt.

Ross' Notes, Neat
Nose: Citrus, pine resin, smoke, and malt.
First: Smooth, round, and frictionless - it doesn't stick to the tongue at all, rather it rolls off it.
Second: Bites, with a light lemon butter
Third: A sweetness comes through, almost like a light toffee.

With a drop of water: Cuts out the high notes and smooths out the nose.

N.B. Ross & Tristan "The water reduces the complexity as well as bite, which makes it very mellow and pleasant, but really takes away alot of the character of the scotch. It is almost like it homogenises the scotch, making the flavours difficult to seperate."
