Although Lagavulin was founded in 1816 at Lagavulin Bay on the island of Islay (eye-la), at least 10 illegal distilleries had been on the same site since 1742. The whisky at Lagavulin undergoes the longest distillation of all the Islay malts: 5 hours for the first distillation and 9 hours for the second.
